eBay Fee Calculator v7.0 released

Fee Calculators, Web-Based Tools, eBay Tools Add comments

eBay LogoToday I've just finished with the redesign of my eBay Fee Calculator. This is a free online tool I've made to allow people to easily calculate what their total eBay and PayPal fees would be to sell an item on eBay. You can also use it to reverse calculate your eBay fees to determine what amount you would need to sell your item for to receive the amount you want after fees. To learn more about selling on eBay, you can read eBay's help page How do I sell on eBay? or visit their official fees page for more info.

This calculator has been updated with the latest eBay fee rates as of March 15, 2009. It supports both Fixed Price and Auction Format listings, all of eBay's listing upgrades (including International Site Visibility), and their new Powerseller Discount. It also includes a reverse fee calculator that can tell you what price you would need to sell your item for (or what amount you would need to charge for Shipping & Handling) to receive the exact amount you want after fees. When using this feature, please be mindful of eBay's excessive Shipping & Handling policy.

To calculate your eBay fees you first choose what Category you are listing your item in and what Listing Format you are using. This is necassary because with eBay's latest fee changes the two formats now carry different fee rates and even the category in which you list your item can affect your fee rate as well. If you're using the Fixed Price Format you simply enter your auction's Buy It Now price or if you're using the Auction Format you enter your auction's Opening and Closing Price (and optionally a Reserve Price). If you're creating a Multiple Item Dutch Auction you would enter your auction's "Lowest Successful Bid" into the Closing Price box. When using the standard Auction Format you also have the option of including Buy It Now as a separate listing upgrade. The correct fee for Buy It Now will always be displayed next to the Buy It Now option in the Listing Upgrades box, and will automatically be updated as you enter your Buy It Now Price.

You may also notice blue arrows pointing at various words in the calculator. These arrows mean there is more information available. By clicking on the arrows, or on the words next to the arrows, it will open up more advanced options in the calculator. For example, if you click on the word Total eBay Fees you will see a breakdown of your eBay fees, or if you click on the word Opening Price you will see an option to enter a Reserve Price.

If you're selling more than one item in a single auction enter the number of items you are offering for sale in the Quantity box. By default, the calculator will assume that all of your items successfully sold, but, if only some of your items sold click on the word Quantity to open up a new field called Items Successfully Sold. Here you can type in the number of items you actually sold to have your fees and profit calculated for just those items. Another tip to remember when creating multiple item auctions is that when you enter amounts into the calculator it's expecting per item amounts. For example, when the calculator asks for your Shipping & Handling, Cost of Postage, or Cost to Acquire what it's really asking for is your Shipping & Handling per item, Cost of Postage per item, and Cost to Acquire per item.

I also want to better clarify the difference between Shipping & Handling and Cost of Postage. In the calculator you use the Shipping & Handling box to enter the amount you charge your buyer for shipping and handling and you use the Cost of Postage box to enter your actual cost of postage. By default, the calculator will assume these two amounts are the same and so whenever you enter an amount into the Shipping & Handling box it will copy it into your Cost of Postage box, unless you decide to change it.

The Listing Upgrades box allows you to choose which listing upgrades you may be using in your auction and allows you to easily see and edit their prices. You may notice the 30-Day Listing upgrade has a price of $0.00. Does this mean it's free? Well yes, but only for items created using the Fixed Price Format. Selecting the 30-day Listing option will not cost you any extra, however it will increase the prices of some of the other listing upgrades.

Below that you can choose whether or not you want to include PayPal fees and if so, what you PayPal fee rate is. If you don't know what your PayPal fee rate is, you can click on the Question Mark to find out. You can also choose whether or not you want to include eBay's Powerseller Discount, and if so, what your Final Value Fee discount is.

Finally, the calculator also comes with a series of Editable Fee Tables. By clicking on the appropriate category you can see and edit all of the different fee rates used by the calculator for that category.

If you have any suggestions, comments, or ideas for the calculator I would love to hear them. Just leave a comment on this page or e-mail me directly to let me know!

Previous Versions

Here are some previous versions of the calculator I've made over the years each with the different eBay fee rates of the time. As you can see my first two versions were downloadable programs (written in Visual Basic), but since they were hard to update and maintain I started making web-based versions as of August 2006.

Version 1.0 (May 06, 2004) Version 2.0 (November 09, 2005)
Version 3.0 (August 07, 2006) Version 4.0 (February 23, 2008)
Version 5.0 (April 10, 2008) Version 6.0 (October 06, 2008)

  2. Rodger says:

    Hello,

We need this to have multiple item listings, if possible. Thanks!!

  3. Tam says:

I've been using this site for months. And this I must say is a great update.
But I still think the site will look better if you place the input box on the left side and make it more visible.

  4. Jim says:

This is a great tool..thank you. My question is, is there a way to calculate the fees for Ebay Motors?
    Thanks again
    Jim

  5. Bobbie says:

This upgrade is wonderful! I cannot even imagine how much time you have put into this. It is amazing. Thank you so much and I look forward to seeing the store format.

  6. Sue says:

Hi Ryan, I think the new Fee Calculator for Ebay is FANTASTIC & just went & donated to you. Keep up the good work.;0)

  7. Yinka says:

This site saved me $217.80,Paid someone $7500.00 for an item on eBay,and the seller did not ship. I called paypal and they said they are able to recover $7282.20,they also said they will go after the seller to recover the rest. Something seem fishy with the figure,so I checked out this site, and go figure, the difference was paypal fee. Needless to say I called them and I got my money back. I can't believe they tried to profit from fraud.

  8. Doug says:

    Ryan,
The caculator is an outstanding tool. Thanks so much for all you do. It has help me determine if an item is worth buying at the price point and if I can make money off of the item. Again great job!!!!!!!

  9. Dman says:

Where is the option to find out the fees if your item doesn't sell?
    thanks

  10. Jules says:

Awesome. Thank you but can I have it in sterling? Great Britain Pounds as well please!

  11. Roger K. says:

Love the tool. Only possible suggestion would be to specify that on the Industrial Equipment category there are only certain categories that require the additional fee.

So maybe you list one as an Industrial Equipment, and one as Industrial Equip. w/ surcharge (or something like that).

    Either way - Great job!

    • Ryan Olbe says:

Thanks for the tip. To make things a bit clearer I've added a little information box that pops up when you select the "Business & Industrial" category that tells people which categories those special fees apply to.

  12. Dianne says:

How do I enter information into the Ebay Fees calculator if I have a Best Offer item? If I enter it as a fixed price item it doesn't allow me to change the final price so is it considered an auction item with a Buy it now fee? Thanks for your help.

    • Ryan Olbe says:

If you're using Best Offer you would choose "Fixed Price Format" and then enter your Best Offer price in the Buy It Now price field. With Best Offer items the calculator doesn't need to know your starting Buy It Now price because it doesn't affect your Insertion fees, it's only your ending price (your Best Offer price) that affects your Final Value Fees.

  13. Cindy says:

I was wondering if the calculator will handle eBays promotion for FREE SHIPPING? I tried setting the Shipping and Handling to $0.00 however I don't know if it takes into account the discount eBay offers for doing FREE SHIPPING?

    • Ryan Olbe says:

I assume you're talking about this discount mentioned on eBay's Powerseller Discounts page...

EXTENDED THROUGH JUNE! For items sold between October 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009 PowerSellers with high DSRs that qualify for Final Value Fee discounts will get double the discounts on their items sold with free shipping.

If that's the case you would enable your Powerseller Fee Discount in the calculator by checking the "Include Powerseller Discount" checkbox and then typing in double your normal discount amount. For example, if your DSRs are 4.9 or higher, you would normally get a 20% fvf discount, with free shipping you would get a 40% fvf discount. So you would type in 40% into the powerseller discount box. Right now the calculator doesn't have all the powerseller discount tables internalized so you have to type in your discount amount manually, however I may change this in the future. As for entering the actual shipping amounts, you've got it right. You would type in $0.00 into the "Shipping & Handling" field and your actual cost of postage into the "Cost of Postage" field.

I love, love, love this tool. i've used your various versions for years; but, this latest one, you've really nailed. very neat, concise and simple to use. thanks so much

  21. Shirley says:

Ryan - just came across your site - I had an old calculator bookmarked, but your version is easier to use and covers it all. So much easier than trying to get this information from the eBay help site - not that they would intentionally make it harder to figure out how much they rip us off for, huh? Thank you for taking the time and creating a useful seller tool!

  22. Dee says:

I just discovered your eBay calculator and think it may save me some time and money. I was wondering if you had considered making an iPhone app out of it. The app that's available hasn't been updated since 2008 and reviews are slanted towards the negative for that one. Thanks for your efforts.

  23. a3d says:

This save a lot of time for me to calculate the items.
Thanks a lot and I will recommended it to all !!
    :)

  24. Louise Sage says:

How can I download this version so it will appear on my toolbar at the top of my page. Very convenient that way. Thanks.

  25. Kevin says:

Ryan thanks for this great utility. I use it on a regular basis and it really comes in handy when establishing prices for my eBay items. Good work! Thank you for making this available. I appreciate your efforts!

  26. sonu says:

this is excellent save me so much time
    thanks for your work

  27. Larry says:

Great tool. Thanks. Note: as of Oct 1, BIN price in auction-style listings MUST be at least 10 percent higher than the minimum opening bid.

  28. Inman says:

Ryan - I have been using your eBay calculator for some time. I just wanted to ask you....shouldn't there be an option for cross-border payment fee near the Paypal fee under the eBay calculator?

I am a Non-US seller and I am always charged this cross-border fee for all my eBay sales from US and other countries. Your Paypal Fee calculator has this feature but eBay Fee calculator is missing it. It will be very helpful for sellers like me if you can add that feature.

    • Ryan Olbe says:

Ah, you're right, it's not there. I'm actually planning a substantial redesign to the web-version which will bring it up to version 8.0. That will be one of the new features I'll add in the new version. In the meantime, you will have to manually change the 2.9% to a 3.9% in the PayPal percentage box and it will give you the right amount for cross-border.
