You're right, to change the icon of a shortcut you can right-click on it, then choose Properties > Shortcut > Change Icon. But to change the icon of a file you have to do something different. First open up My Computer then click on Tools > Folder Options > File Types. Then choose the File Type you want to edit (for example ODS for OpenDocument Spreadsheets). Then click Advanced, then click Change Icon and that should do it.

Hi, thanks for the icons. Managed to change the desktop shortcuts of Writer, Calc and Impress. But unable to change the document file icons e.g. .doc, .exe, .ppt files. When I right-click and choose "Properties," there's no Shortcut tab to change icon. Any suggestions? Read somewhere that might have to edit the registry.
