Version 7.0 (2009 eBay fee rates)
Updated April 10, 2010 7:23PM
Today I'm releasing version 8 of my eBay fee calculator which uses the new eBay fee rates as of March 30, 2010. As many of you know I released a preliminary version of this on March 30, 2010 and I've spent much of my free time since then programming in fixes, changes, and adjustments in response to your feedback. This new version should be working much better for everyone now. To make sure you're viewing the latest version hold SHIFT and press Reload in your web browser. Here's what's new in this version.

Free Insertion Fees for Auction Style listings starting at $0.01 to $0.99
Under eBay's new fee policy, if you are creating an No Reserve Auction Style listing and your starting price is $0.01 to $0.99 your Insertion Fees will be free, but you can only create 100 of these free listings a month. After that you will be charged a $0.10 Insertion Fee. If you add a reserve to your auction you will not be eligible for the free Insertion Fee. eBay Store owners are also not eligible for the free Insertion Fee.
Removal of the "List 5 Free" and Store Inventory Formats
Previously my calculator allowed you to calculate the fees for the 4 major eBay listings formats: Auction Format, Fixed Price Format, Auction Format (5 Free) and Store Inventory Format. As of March 30th 2010, eBay is removing 2 of these formats (Store Inventory and 5 Free). There is now only one Auction Format and one Fixed Price Format, but your fees will be different depending on if you have an eBay Store or not. You can choose whether you have an eBay Store or not from the Stores Level dropdown. If you don't have an eBay Store, choose "None" from the list.
New color-coded inputs
In my previous version the boxes where you would enter your amounts and the boxes which would show your fees were both in the same color (white). This confused some people because they didn't know what they were supposed to fill in and what the calculator was supposed to fill in. In my new version the boxes where you enter your amounts are now shown in yellow, the boxes which show your fees are now shown in red, and the boxes which show your profit are now shown in green. In this new version, negative profit is also now shown in red.
No more hidden inputs
In my previous version I would use arrows to signify more information. For example, if you wanted to enter a reserve price you would click on the arrow next to the word "Opening Price". If you wanted to see a fee breakdown you would click on the arrow next to the word "Total eBay Fees". Well it turns out a lot of people just didn't get the whole "arrow" thing and so I've removed them in this version. Now, everything is visible by default and if you want to see a breakdown of your fees you simply click on the "View Fee Breakdown" button.
Automatic detection of Listing Format
In my previous version you would have to select from a radio button whether you were selling in "Auction Format" or "Fixed Price Format". In this version the calculator automatically figures out what format you're trying to calculate fees for based on what you type in. If all you fill in is a "Buy It Now" price the calculator will use the Fixed Price Format fee structure. If you type in both an Opening Price and a Closing Price the calculator will use the Auction Style Format fee structure. If you want to calculate the fees for an Auction Style listing with Buy It Now, simply enter an Opening Price, a Closing Price and a Buy It Now Price and the correct Buy It Now fee will be applied. When adding Buy It Now to an Auction Style listing, your Buy It Now price must be at least 10% higher than your Opening Price.
Built-in Selling Format Fee Comparison
Whenever you sell an item on eBay you are given the choice of listing it in "Auction Style Format" or "Fixed Price Format". However, what most people don't realize is that the two formats carry different fees. One format will always end up being cheaper than the other, but the question is which one? With my new version you can easily find out. Just type in an Opening Price and a Closing Price then press the "View Fee Breakdown" button and you will see the fees for both listing formats compared side-by-side. The Closing Price you enter will be used as your Buy It Now Price in Fixed Price Format.
Easier to copy and paste fee amounts
In my previous version you could view a breakdown of your fees by clicking on the arrow next to the word "Total eBay Fees", however because of the way it was designed if you tried to copy and paste these fee amounts it would be troublesome. In my new version you can easily copy and paste all your fee amounts for both Auction Style and Fixed Price Format.
Options
I've added in a new series of options to configure about the calculator and I'll describe what each one does here.
Category
Here you can select which category you're selling your item in. eBay now has 4 main fee-specific categories: Electronics, Media, Accessories, and Other. Because it's sometimes difficult to know which category your item belongs in I've included common category names in the dropdown for your convenience. For example, if you sell Clothing, just select "Clothing" from the dropdown list. You can have your favorite category loaded by default by using the category URL parameter. For example,
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?category=clothing
Stores Level
Here you can select which level of eBay Store you have. Choose "None" if you don't have an eBay Store. You can have your Store level loaded by default by using the store URL parameter. For example,
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?store=basic
FVF Discount
Here you can select which level of Powerseller Discount should be applied to your fees. As of April 2010 standard Powersellers receive a 5% discount off their Final Value Fees and Top-Rated Sellers receive a 20% discount. The eBay Stores Store Referral Credit Program (which would provide a 75% discount off FVF) has been taken down as of March 30, 2010. You can load your desired FVF Discount amount by default by using the fvf_discount URL parameter. For example,
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?fvf_discount=20%
Payment Type
Here you can choose which type of PayPal payment you are receiving for your item. The amounts in bold represent your PayPal Monthly Sales Volume. So, for instance, if you receive between $3,000 and $10,000 per month and you're receiving a domestic payment choose the word Domestic under the $3,000 to $10,000 heading. You can specify your own PayPal fee rate by using the ppp and ppf URL parameters as shown in the example below:
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?ppp=2.2%&ppf=$0.30
Prefilled Media
Select "Yes" to this question if you are using "Pre Filled Item Information" in your Fixed Price Media listings. This reduces your Insertion Fee to $0.05. This is a promotion eBay is running until December 31, 2010. You can read more about it here:
http://pages.ebay.com/promo/5centmedia/
Set this option to "Yes" by default by using the prefilled URL parameter as shown below:
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?prefilled=1
eBay Giving Works
Here you can select which percentage of your item price you donated to an eBay Giving Works charity. Doing so will refund your Insertion and Final Value Fees by this percentage. You can load your favorite donation amount by using the egw URL parameter as show below:
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?egw=10%
Copy BIN Price
Select "Yes" to this question if you want to automatically copy your Buy It Now Price into your Opening and Closing Price. You can make your selection permanent by using the copy_bin URL parameter. For example:
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?copy_bin=1
Copy Opening Price
Select "Yes" to this question if you want to automatically copy your Opening Price into your Closing Price. You can make your selection permanent by using the copy_opening URL parameter. For example:
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?copy_opening=1
Copy S&H
Select "Yes" to this question if you want to automatically copy your Shiping & Handling amount into your Cost of Postage. You can make your selection permanent by using the copy_sh URL parameter. For example:
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?copy_sh=1
Auto Calculate
Select "Yes" to this question if you want your fees to be auto calculated. This means that as soon as you type in an amount your fees will be calculated. If you prefer to press a "Calculate" button instead select "No" to this question. You can make your selection permanent by using the auto URL parameter. For example:
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?auto=0
Quantity
This option is really 3 options in one. You can specify the number of items you listed for sale, the number of items you successfully sold, and the number of items you shipped out. Your Insertion Fees will be multiplied by your Quantity Listed, your Final Value Fees will be multiplied by your Quantity Sold, and your shipping costs will be multiplied by your Quantity Shipped. If you're selling multiple items within a single listing, enter 1 as your Quantity Listed. You can increase and decrease your quantity amounts by pressing the up and down arrow keys. You can save your choices by using the URL parameters shown below:
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?qty_listed=1&qty_sold=1&qty_shipped=1
I've also added in a new Save button for saving your options. After you choose your options if you click the Save button it will save your options into the URL (web address) of the calculator. If bookmark that URL (with the options in it) those options will be loaded by default the next time you use the calculator.
When using the URL parameters, you can combine multiple options using the & symbol. For example, if you wanted to disable auto fee calculation and disable S&H copying you would type the following...
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?auto=0©_sh=0
When combining options, remember there should only be one ? (after the .htm), but after that you can include as many options as you like with a & in between each one. For options that can be toggled on and off, a value of 0 means off and value of 1 means on.
Listing Upgrades
I've also added in support for all the different eBay listing upgrades. To access them just click on the word Listing Upgrades next to the word Options.
New in this version is the ability to see a subtotal of all your listing upgrade fees. Combination listing upgrades such as Value Pack now have all their members indented to more easily see that they are part of a "group". Selecting Value Pack will now automatically select all of it's members. Selecting the "List in Two Categories" option will double your Insertion and Listing Upgrade Fees (except for Scheduled Listing). I've also added tooltips to each of the listing upgrades explaining what they do.
Reverse Fee Calculator
I've also updated my reverse calculator to use the new eBay fee rates. The reverse calculator allows you to type in an amount you want to receive after fees and it tells you what you would need to charge for your item or what you would need to charge for S&H to receive that amount. If you save your options into the URL the Reverse Calculator will come up by default, if you haven't set your options yet the Options window will come up by default. To access the Reverse Calculator simply click on the word Reverse Calculator next to Listing Upgrades.
The reverse calculator is color-coded now too. The yellow box labeled To receive this amount is what you fill in. As soon as you enter an amount the calculator will give you 2 pieces of information. It will tell you either what price you would need to sell your item for to receive that amount after fees OR what you would need to charge for S&H to receive that amount after fees. It expects you to use one or the other, but not both.
New in this version is the ability to see your break even point for both Auction Style and Fixed Price Format. Your break even point is the minimum amount you would need to sell your item for in order for you not to lose any money from the sale. "Breaking even" means you recover the cost you initially paid to buy the item and you recover the cost of your eBay and PayPal fees and you recover your actual cost of shipping but you don't actually make any money. Your break even point will only get calculated if you enter a "Cost to Acquire".
Fix for the IE7 bug - March 30th 2010 11:29PM
A number of users have reported to me that the site won't work correctly in Internet Explorer 7 or 8, but it will work correctly in any other web browser that conforms to web standards (such as FireFox, Opera, Google Chrome, and Safari). I was finally able to get my hands on an IE7 test machine to figure out what was causing the problem. The problem is that the calculator is written in XHTML and the way you're supposed to serve XHTML to web browsers is with the Content-Type application/xhtml+xml. This is a W3C recommendation and is understood by most, if not all, standards-conforming web browsers. However, Internet Explorer doesn't follow this recommendation and won't display the page correctly. It I try to serve the page to IE as text/html it still won't display correctly, so I've found the only other way is to use application/xml which IE can understand. I could always rename the file to .xml or .xhtml to make IE "more aware" of what type of file it is but Internet Explorer is notorious for not handling the .xhtml file extension correctly. I've heard that when Internet Explorer 9 comes out Microsoft will finally support application/xhtml+xml, but that won't happen until 2011. In the meantime I would highly recommend all Internet Explorer users download Google Chrome Frame to make websites display more correctly. It's a free add-on from Google that overrides Microsoft's rendering engine (Trident) with Google Chrome's rendering engine (WebKit).
You provide a great tool. Thanks for keeping it affordable
Great tool, always use it but this update seems to be broken, page won't load correctly.
Thanks again for your hard work!
I'm using IE7 and it won't load properly. Looks like it's in some sort of rough form. I will try it in Firefox.
Read my IE7 bugfix above and let me know if that fixes it.
Old one was better!!!!
The old version is still available here.
What about the old version did you like better?
a. listing upgrades
b. editable fee rates
c. auto fee calculation
d. reverse fee calculator
e. overall layout
I guess all of them. The old one was much better and simpler. Personally, I think you should make the design of this calculator same as the previous version.
Previous version was very user friendly.
I agree, the old one was so much simpler and user friendly. Dont make it more complicated.
Works perfectly in the latest Firefox. Thanks for the update! This tool is a must use for any eBay seller, then you really know how much they are screwing you on your sales!
Why not put a small donation button on the bottom right-hand side of the page? Even right in the .tip div.
LOL I see you added the donate buttons or were those always there? Cool.
And I didn't like this update at first either, but after using it about 100 times already, I actually like it. Thanks!
If the old one is still available, why don't the complainers just use it instead of the new one.
No one like new updates! Just ask Facebook. Everyone HATED the newsfeed when they released it. Now, every looks at the newsfeed 90% of the time. Not only that, now everyone else wants to incorporate newsfeed into their sites the same way but Facebook has some kind of patent on it.
Does not work. Old one was MUCH better.
Any way to use the old version. Can't get this one to work at all.
Read my IE7 bugfix above. The old version is still available here.
What about the old version did you like better?
a. listing upgrades
b. editable fee rates
c. auto fee calculation
d. reverse fee calculator
e. overall layout
This one looks 'funky' I tryed to use it & it won't calculate anything. Bring back the old one.;0)
Read my IE7 bugfix above and tell me if that fixes it.
Hi Ryan, I tryed that & that wasn't any help to me. So what I did was run a search on google. Found it that way & 'clicked' on it & this one works for me. Maybe the other one wasn't is because I had it saved in my 'favorites' & it didn't update it. I don't know, but this works GREAT now. THANKS & will go donate to the cause.;0) Cause you help MANY sellers.
Liked 7.0 version better. I can't get this one to work either.
I really do like the old format better as well. This one is really hard to read. Thanks for the updated calculator though, it's very useful.
Thank you for this calculator, you don`t know how much this helps me.
any idea when the new calculator will be back up and running?
It will probably take me a week or so to implement all the features I want.
I almost wrote to thank you for not having the calculator copy the shipping charged to the cost of postage. Yesterday, I used it several times without having to go back and re-enter the cost. Now, I find that "feature" is back
If you add ?copy_sh=0 to the end of the URL it will disable that feature. So for instance, instead of bookmarking this URL...
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm
bookmark this one instead...
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?copy_sh=0
And your Shipping & Handling amount will not be copied into the Cost of Postage box. Since this is a recent change, you may have to hold SHIFT and press "Reload" in your web browser to view the latest version.
Is this new one going to allow user to change setting such as PayPal fee percentage which seems to be set at 2.9% we pay a much smaller percentage. Other than that I really like it.
You’re awesome.
Thank you.
If you add ?ppp=2.2&ppf=0.30 to the end of the URL it will override the PayPal fee rate with 2.2% + $0.30 and you can configure that to any percentage and any fixed fee amount of your choosing. ppp stands for PayPal Percentage and ppf stands for PayPal Fixed. So for instance, instead of bookmarking this URL...
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm
bookmark this one instead...
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?ppp=2.2&ppf=0.30
This will override the default PayPal fee rate of 2.9% + $0.30 with the amount you enter (2.2% + $0.30). You don't need to include the % symbol or the $ symbol, but you can if you want to. If you select "Cross-Border" it will add 1% to the percentage amount you enter.
Since this is a recent change, you may have to hold SHIFT and press "Reload" in your web browser to view the latest version. Depending on your web browser, just pressing "Reload" will not be enough.
I like setting the parameters in the URL. It would be great if I could set my store subscription and powerseller levels too.
I have another question too. I am in Thailand, so my basic Paypal fees are $0.34 + 3.9%. But they also charge 2.5% currency conversion fee when I make a withdrawal to my Thai bank. I've set my parameters to ppp=6.4&ppf=0.34. But I'm a little confused about how to enter my cost to acquire. Should I calculate my cost to acquire using Paypal's currency conversion rate of 31.4 Thai Baht per dollar or the actual currency conversion rate of 32.3? I'm currently using PayPals rate for the conversion, so am I deducting it twice? I'm confused.
You can now set your Stores subscription level with ?stores_level=basic and your powerseller discount level with ?powerseller_level=top or ?fvf_discount=20% to specify the percentage exactly. As for your Cost to Acquire, if your PayPal balance is held in USD you can use the standard (non-PayPal) rate of currency exchange (if your buyers are sending you payments in USD). If your PayPal balance is held in THB, then use PayPal's rate of currency exchange.
Thank you for this. It is so helpful for me. I would love this as an iPhone app. Thanks again.
media listings with product details selected are $0.05 to list for the rest of the year
http://pages.ebay.com/promo/5centmedia/
I've added a new option prefilled=1 to force the calculator to use a $0.05 Insertion Fee for Fixed Price Media listings...
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?category=media&prefilled=1
The $0.05 Insertion Fee will only apply if you choose "Media" as your category.
I wish you have an app for the iphone, would be very helpful.. thanks for a great calculator.
RYAN,
Thank you for the response. it worked perfectly. Is there any way to change the font size of the displayed results, unlike the old version is really small in a light font and hard to see being dumped in the middle of all the other information.
Can the old version be set to the new eBay numbers?
Thank you again.
Bill
Ryan,
Thanks, You do great work, and I know many appreciate it. I think the last version was much better. It's easier to look at. Everything was easy to use, and to understand. I don't like the look of the new version at all or how it is set up. I am not saying you don't do great work, but when comparing it to the previous version I would much rather see the last version updatded and brought back. Please updatde and keep the last version. Even if you decide to keep the new version 8, at least update the previous version so we can still use it.
Thanks,
Rylan
OMG, I love you!!!!!!!!!!! I really love this calculator - I just had to thank you for it!!!!!!!! It's so much easier than the last one....not that I didn't really appreciate and love it, but this one is just...WOW!!!
Great Work! this is by far the best tool I have ever used . Saves tons of time and is very accurate . A++++
Thank you again
Andy
Ryan,
A simple google search on "Ebay fees calculator" bought me first to your page. And I am so glad it did!! If only I had done this search a few years ago, would have saved me lots of time and effort.
Great stuff here. Keep up the good work!
-Savio
Fantastic little web-app! (Your eBay fee calculator).
... but, when I try it today, it does not give correct calculation for FVF. And, I believe that I have all options correctly set. For example, two days ago I sold pottery piece for $65.
eBay charged me $6.20 FVF,
But calculator shows $6.90 FVF
Several other recent sales show similar discrepancy. Perhaps was recent bug in calc (?) since late last week when I looked at v8.0 calculator it DID show FVF that matched what eBay charged me.
TIA -- I have used you calculators for at least a year or so. Great product! Thank you for making such a fine tool available.
Assuming your item falls into the "Other" category, $6.90 should be the correct FVF. It's 12% of the first $50 ($6.00) plus 6% of the remaining (6% of $15 = $0.90), $6.00 + $0.90 = $6.90. There seems to be a discrepancy of about 10%. Did you donate 10% of your item's price to an eBay Giving Works charity?
April 10, 2010 Update
It was determined that eBay was charging you the old Stores fee rates because you created the listing before the new fee rates went into effect.
Ryan,
Thank you for your calculator! TheDualMonitorKing.Com uses this for our eBay store calculations.
ebay cal 8.0 cals wrong, for a $600 cam/photo catalog item, fvf in ebay is like 28.75, but urs is 31.5
??
$31.50 is the correct Final Value Fee. Cameras & Photo falls under the "Electronics" category fee structure. It is 8.0% of the initial $50 ($4.00) plus 5.0% of the remaining (5% of $550 is $27.50), $27.50 plus $4.00 is $31.50. $28.75 is what you would have paid under the old fee structure (before March 30, 2010). You probably created the listing before the fee change went into effect and so eBay is charging you the old rates. You can calculate using the old rates by using version 7.0 here...
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay_fee_calculator7.0.htm
Hi,
If my paypal fee is 3.4%+0.3$ than I should just write:
http://www.rolbe.com/ebay.htm?ppp=3.4%&ppf=$0.30
?
Thank you for a great calculator!
Yes, that's exactly right.
It's beautiful. I thought the previous version was great, but this is stunning!
Ever thought about creating a merged calculator that lets you compare the fees between selling on Ebay and Amazon Marketplace? This would be HUGE to people who trying to decide which would be the best place to list a particular item and under what circumstances.
Ryan,
thanks so much for the online ebay calc! Keep up the great work!
Hi Ryan Your new eBay calculator is quite impressive as the graphics go, however, there is one tool on the 2009 calculator that was very useful. The section called, if you want this price? What price would I set my item for sale. I am downsizing my home and this particular calculation has helped me to decide if I was selling an item or donating to charity. If it is on the new calculator, I am not seeing it. Please put that option back into 2010 if it is not on your current calculator... thank you so much. I have only sold 3 items last year and getting ready to downsize my home to nothing. In addition, I think from your website that you are now offering a seller's log... WHAT A GREAT SERVICE... why bother with eBay if time posting costs more than money made. Thanks ME
It's there. You just have to click on Reverse Calculator to see it now. You can click here to read more about it.
OHHH FORGIVE ME... You have a reverse calculator... so sorry. I just discovered your 2010 updated calculator. THANK YOU... I look forward to the SELLER's log because I tried to make one on Excel and it is tedious to fill in. I wish it would be automatic as is the invoice eBay and PayPal provide. Thanks again for your efforts. Michelle
I see I'm the only one asking this question so I must be missing something: If the buyer pays postage why is that amount deducted from the profit?
The amount the buyer pays for Shipping & Handling (in the S&H Charged field) is added to your profit. The actual amount you spend on postage (in the Cost of Postage field) is subtracted from your profit. The amount you receive for S&H is considered income, but the amount you actually spend on postage is considered an expense so it's subtracted from your profit.
Of course - I should have figured that out. Thank you.
